MITIAMO will combine its celebration of Indigenous Round this Saturday with activities funded by the Loddon Shire and state and federal governments’ flood recovery fund. Pyramid Hill and Wedderburn have already been recipients of funding and have held special events, but the Superoos will blend free entry, kids’ activities and more with recognition of the Indigenous contribution to the club and community.
MITIAMO will combine its celebration of Indigenous Round this Saturday with activities funded by the Loddon Shire and state and federal governments’ flood recovery fund. Pyramid Hill and Wedderburn have already been recipients of funding and have held special events, but the Superoos will blend free entry, kids’ activities and more with recognition of the Indigenous contribution to the club and community. Mitiamo will wear a guernsey against Bears Lagoon Serpentine designed by Crystal West, a Yorta Yorta and Barkindji woman whose family has been associated with the club for many years. The jumper incorporates a Meeting Place to symbolise the club’s supporters and stylised kangaroos to reference the nickname. Crystal played netball for Mitiamo for 23 years, and then coached, while her father Gordon Hynes, a proud Yorta Yorta man, played about 500 games for the club until he retired in his late 40s. The A Grade best on court medal is named for Crystal, while the senior football best afield will win the Joey Harrison Medal, in honour of the Mitiamo games record holder, who was a member of the Stolen Generations. There will be a Welcome to Country and a smoking ceremony before the senior match, free coffee during the day, and for the kids a half-time Auskick clinic after which every child gets a free footy, face-painting, temporary tattoos and a movie in the social rooms. All junior players also get a $10 canteen voucher.
