Honour roll finds a new home
THE World War Two honour roll rescued from the Derby Hall and restored will be displayed in Bridgewater Memorial Hall for the first time on Anzac Day.
THE World War Two honour roll rescued from the Derby Hall and restored will be displayed in Bridgewater Memorial Hall for the first time on Anzac Day.
Lynette Harrison and Rob Pollock will present the gilt-framed roll to Bridgewater on Loddon Development for permanent display at its new home.
They are descendants of the Derby men on the roll. Lynette’s father Les was about to be sent to New Guinea when his brother Jack was seriously injured in a farm accident and returned home.
Rob’s uncle Jock was captured and held prisoner by the Japanese at Changi.
Lynette and Rob said the roll had been displayed for many years in the Derby Hall and they were pleased that it had been restored.
“At the Dawn Service in Bridgewater on Anzac Day, the roll honouring young Derby men who enlisted in World War Two will again go on display and remind today’s generation of their service to our country,” they said.
Meanwhile, restoration of the Bridgewater hall is continuing with mortar repairs and tuck pointing of brickwork after BOLD received a Loddon Shire grant.
Hall president Jill Hobbs said temporary scaffolding would be removed before the Anzac Day service.
“Work on the project will resume after Anzac Day but for our day of remembrance, people will have an unhindered view of the memorial honour rolls,” she said.
