WEDDERBURN is locked by floodwaters late on Christmas morning with the Calder Highway between Inglewood and Charlton now closed.

SES units have gone through rising floodwaters to reach the town, rescue boats in tow to assist with helping people from flood homes near the Nandoo Creek.

There have been at least two flood rescues in Wedderburn where a dozen requests for help have been received by the SES since about 7am.

Crews have come from Bendigo, Marong and Castlemaine. Wycheproof unit was called in but unable to drive through flood waters.

The SES's Brad Dalgliesh said an SEScommunications unit was being to sent to the town.

A watch and act alert has now been issued for the town.

  • You can stay safe by avoiding flooded and low-lying areas.

  • Floodwater can be very deep, rise quickly and move fast.

  • Be aware that heavy rainfall may also increase the potential for landslides and debris across roads.

  • The alert says: "If you are located in theWedderburn township, you are in danger. You should immediately move indoors, away from floodwater. Do not enter floodwater."

    The town had at least 100mm rainto 7am this morning. Rain has continued with up to another 50mm falling today.

    The intensity of the storm exceeded forecasts.
