Holt returns in red-hot form

WILL Holt’s return for Wedderburn Band in hot all-round form has led his side to its first win of the season.

After claiming 2-7 from five overs on the Band’s turf wicket, Holt smacked 32 from 39 balls as the home side eased their way to victory over Kingower.

Kingower’s grip on the premiership trophy is looking more tenuous by the week, with the team keenly feeling the absence of last season’s champion player Jayden Leach with both bat and ball.

Blakle Pickles, with 26 from 34 balls, and David Rose, 27 off 32, were the only two batsmen to get going as Kingower battled its way to 9-103 from 35 overs.

Isaac Holt, Steve Giorlando and Adam Postle joined Will Holt in taking two wickets each for Wedderburn.

At 3-35, and with a history of dramatic collapses this season, the Band’s chase was looking sketchy, but Isaac and Will Holt combined for a 44-run fourth-wicket partnership.

Three quick wickets saw Wedderburn slump to 6-85 as the nerves were beginning to kick in once more.

However, veterans Giorlando and Danny Benaim got the team home in the 29th over with an unbeaten 20-run stand, Benaim cracking 11 from 13 balls while the more circumspect Giorlando made eight from 42 deliveries.

Matt Rowe (2-26) and Pickles (2-28) were best with the ball for Kingower.

The Band has a week off, while Kingower, third on the ladder, travels to face second-placed Arnold in a one-day match this Saturday.
