Hockey’s diamond days
IT would have been a huge feat, Wedderburn Redbacks’ hockey life member Michelle Hargreaves said as the code celebrated its 60th anniverary on Saturday.
IT would have been a huge feat, Wedderburn Redbacks’ hockey life member Michelle Hargreaves said as the code celebrated its 60th anniverary on Saturday.
Michelle was among the club’s life members helping current players celebrate the diamond anniversary.
“We’re unique in North Central, the only competition in the state with all three codes - hockey, football and netball, We come from the grassroots and hockey is a great sport.”
She said passion and drive of volunteers over 60 years had “kept the sport and the club alive”.
The Stephenson family was well represented during the unveiling of a seat to honour the club’s life members.
Wendy Smith’s mother, Vi Stephenson was the first hockey life member.
“She didn’t play. She was just a mum supporting her daghters,” Wendy said.
The family’s involvement in the Redbacks now spans four generations. Wendy’s daughter Hayley has played alongside cousins and now grandson Jye is taking the field with the juniors.
Hockey co-ordinator Cass Reeves said the anniversary was a special day for the club.
After unveiling the life members’ seat, legends of the club joined current players and supporters in the pavilion where memorabilia, photographs and trophies had been displayed.
Early hockey team uniforms were on show, contrasting with the modern designs in club colours.
And the Redbacks capped off the day with a couple of wins.
