Coach Sam Maher made it clear to his players before the game that this was a match that mattered.
Calivil was celebrating eight football and netball premiership reunions on the day, and captain Sam Green was playing his 150th game, which made victory over the Superoos even more welcome.
For virtually the first time this season, the Demons got off to a reasonable start, trailing Mitiamo by five points at the first change, and four points at half-time.
McCarthy, who was playing only his fifth match for the year due to persistent injury, then took control, booting three majors in a five-goal run that gave Calivil a lead they would maintain to the end.
The Demons have performed the double over Mitiamo this season, with local bragging rights secured for 12 months.
At times, Mitiamo looked the superior team but couldn’t convert that into scoreboard pressure.
Poor kicking for goal also cost the Superoos in the second quarter when they kicked 3.6 to Calivil’s 4.1.
