The Wedderburn SES Unit was honoured to receive Excellence in Diversity & Inclusion Recipients at the recent State Emergency Service Excellence Awards.
The Wedderburn SES Unit was honoured to receive Excellence in Diversity & Inclusion Recipients at the recent State Emergency Service Excellence Awards. This award recognises the outstanding contribution of the Wedderburn Unit in championing diversity, inclusion, and leadership within their team and community. Judges said the Wedderburn Unit has demonstrated a clear and proactive commitment to fostering an inclusive environment, aligned with the values and strategic direction of VICSES. “This is most notably reflected in their support of a profoundly deaf member, whom they have welcomed into all aspects of operational and unit life,” they said. “Recognising that true inclusion requires action, members of the unit undertook Auslan training to ensure effective communication and full participation, a practical and meaningful step that speaks to their dedication. “The impact of these efforts has been significant and enduring. The development of Auslan capability within the unit has strengthened both internal teamwork and external community engagement. The Wedderburn Unit has embedded diversity and inclusion not as a one-off initiative, but as a core operational value. “Through their actions, the Wedderburn Unit has created a stronger, more connected, and more representative team. Their example extends beyond their own membership, contributing to a broader cultural shift within the Loddon Mallee region and demonstrating what can be achieved when inclusion is lived, not just expressed. “The Wedderburn Unit embodies the principles of respect, opportunity, and service to community. Their leadership in diversity and inclusion sets a standard for others to follow and reflects the very best of the Victoria State Emergency Service.”
