THE historic Pyramid Hill town clock is being geared for a 21st century upgrade.
Historical society member Trevor McIntosh is co-ordinating a town appeal to raise $7000 for new mechanisms to drive the clock.
“The clock and the clock tower are pretty special ... the clock is 91 years old and in need of replacement to keep more accurate time and adjust automatically twice a year for daylight saving,” he said.
Trevor said one of his jobs when an apprentice at the town co-op garage had been maintaining the clock.
“Ian Bartels and Mark Lacey, when he worked at the store, also helped maintain the clock,” he said.
“The clock looks exactly as it did when first installed but age has caught up - the electromagnetic pendulum mechanism needs replacement.”
The clock had been manufactured by Melbourne company Igrams that still produces industrial clocks.
However, Trevor said new mechanisms to keep the clock ticking would come from Sydney.
“We’ve started the appeal and once the money has been raised, we’ll put in the order.”
