Mr Fitzgerald confirmed he had received an online briefing in December from the Department of Premier and Cabinet on its plans for the lake.

“They shared what I understand is the same information as that provided at Boort (tourism and development committee meeting),” Mr Fitzgerald said, with the department “seeking to understand any evidence of potential impacts to cultural heritage at Lake Boort (and) any information that we have regarding the lake and activities which could have an impact sought information about any mechanisms council has to control impacts.”

Mr Fitzgerald said the lake was Crown land managed by Parks Victoria.

“There is a 2018 management plan in place and a scar trees masterplan. Managing the site in accordance with this is the responsibility of Parks Victoria, not council and therefore we do not have any information regarding activities on the lake.

“As council manages adjacent land at Little Lake Boort and has an interest in visitation and economic activity, we seek that they find a pragmatic approach which balances the competing views and needs without unreasonably limiting access to public land,” Mr Fitzgerald said.
