The visitors came out of the blocks hard at Serpentine’s home ground and banged on three quick goals with slick ball movement that had the Bears players chasing tail.
They fought back in the second half of the first term but never captured the lead until about 10 minutes into the last quarter.
And then Serp was the beneficiary of another Maiden Gully fadeout, kicking 5.2 to 1.3 in the final term to win by 20 points.
Even in its two big wins for the year – by 67 points against Newbridge and 83 points over Mitiamo – Maiden Gully has been outscored in the last quarter, giving coaches Shaun Filo and Angus Monfries a lot to work on.
Bears coach Jake Wilkinson said the team had a focus on finishing strongly “like the good teams do” and had put that into action against the Eagles. He was also pleased with the first-quarter recovery after being jumped, with the Bears showing resilience and improved connection. The Bears’ second win for the year put them into a logjam in the middle of the ladder, with five teams battling for a spot in the lower reaches of the top five, including Maiden Gully.
Captain Charlie Gadsden was pivotal in getting Serp back into the game in the first quarter, with Nathan Twigg dominating in the ruck despite committing some rare mistakes.
Defender Llogan Mayman helped to repel the Eagles’ attacks and reliable goalkicker Farran Priest booted three for his generally off-target team, which ended with 10 more scoring shots than Maiden Gully.
Darwin fly-in player Tye Bedford was impressive again for the Eagles, along with another interstate recruit Isaac Neretlis and midfielder Anthony Robins.
Last season’s best and fairest Dan Russell but shaded in the ruck by Twigg but still made a significant contribution.
