G-G honours Paul’s 41 years as a Legatee
BENDIGO Legacy marked the centenary of its formation with a high-tea on Saturday where Governor General Sam Mostyn recognised members for their long service.
BENDIGO Legacy marked the centenary of its formation with a high-tea on Saturday where Governor General Sam Mostyn recognised members for their long service.
Among them was Boort’s Paul Haw presented with a 30-year certificate.
Paul’s membership of Legacy has stretched over 41 years.
When he first joined, Paul Paul said there were more than 40 war widows in Boort and surrounding districts.
“We are now down to one war widow but the work of Legacy in supporting war widows and their families remains as important as ever,” he said.
“Bendigo Legacy is dedicated to caring for the families of veterans who have lost their life or health in service to our country for nearly one hundred years.
“Our caring and compassionate service assists widow(er)s, children and dependants with a disability to build a sustainable future after the loss or injury of their loved one. Dedicated local volunteers are committed to helping families through difficult times.”
Paul said Bendigo Legacy had members from a wide region - Bendigo, Castlemaine, Echuca, Kerang, Kyabram, Macedon Ranges, Seymour and Swan Hill.
The Goveror General is patron of Legacy Australia and said following Saturday’s celebrations that Legacy was “a remarkable organisation, made up of dedicated Legatees who provide connection and practical and financial support to the families of those who have served our nation.”
She said members presented with service certificates were honoured for “their enduring contribution and decades of commitment to supporting veterans’ families across the region”.
The first Legacy clubs were formed in 1923 in Hobart and Melbourne to assist veterans, widows and children after World War One. Legacy today supports more than 28,000 individuals and families across Australia and has 3200 volunteer members of 41 clubs.
Mr Haw’s service to the veterans’ community also includes as Boort RSL sub-branch president.
