From land of Burns, Aileen now an Aussie
MORE than half a century after arriving as a child in Australia, Inglewood’s Aileen Burley last week made her citizenship official.
MORE than half a century after arriving as a child in Australia, Inglewood’s Aileen Burley last week made her citizenship official.
The retired early education worker who moved to Loddon six years ago only recently realised she was not an Australian citizen. Her application approved, Aileen last week took the oath and received citizernship at a ceremony conducted in Wedderburn by Loddon Mayor Dan Straub and CEO Lincoln Fitzgerald.
Aileen said her parents decided to emigrate to Australia in 1971, wanting to give their family new opportunities.
“I was eight years old when we came to Australia, moving from the land of Burns - the Scottish poet - in Ayeshire,” Aileen said. “We lived in Ballarat where there was a large expat Scottish community.”
