Forgotten Heroes of Our Land
Indi Simpson's evocative poem for Remembrance Day

They marched with pride, they fought with might,
our fathers sons who faced the fight.
Through smoke and fire, through fear and rain,
they stood for us and felt the pain.
From open fields to mountains high,
they dreamed of home beneath our sky.
Of cattle yards and shearing sheds,
of wheat and wool and old tin beds.
They fought for land both wide and brown,
for farms and towns, for every town.
For fruit and grain, for wine and wool,
for Aussie hearts so strong and full.
Now we live in peace each day,
but echoes of their cries still stay.
The young don’t see, they may not know,
the cost behind the crops that grow.
The flags still wave, but fewer fly,
and fewer stop to wonder why.
Our shops are full, our shelves are wide,
but we forget the ones who died.
They fought for land, for home, for peace,
for life and love that would not cease.
Their sacrifice is swept aside,
forgotten where our memories hide.
The trenches deep, the battles loud,
are buried beneath the modern crowd.
But every fruit, each grain, each vine,
was bought with lives like yours and mine.
So let us not forget the price,
the blood they gave, the sacrifice.
Our boys are gone, but we must stand,
and honor them across this land.
For every meal and drop we share,
was bought with courage, love, and care.
Let Aussie pride and working hands,
remember those who loved our lands.
