BACKERS of a new ambulance station for Wedderburn are back to first base in their call for answers from the State Government.
A third Health and Ambulance Services Minister this year will be asked to explain why the promised station was ditched.
Community campaigner Darryl Arnott said: “We first called on Mary-Ann Thomas but she resigned, then it was Harriet Shing and now she has resigned. But it doesn’t matter how many times the State Government changes minister, we will keep asking the questions and calling for the promise to be honoured,” Mr Arnott said.
Ms Shring resigned last week after the toppling of Bendigo East MP Jacinta Allan as premier, four months out from the election. New Premier Ben Carroll on Tuesday announced Ingrid Stitt would take her place.
“The community and our development association continues to pursue this much-needed ambulance station so that paramedics and CERT team members can work from a base that is safe and complies.
“Ambulance Victoria told us the station was needed, the shire council made all the arrangements to transfer land in Wilson Street and then the pin is pulled.
“The Government keeps trying to deflect responsibility for the decision onto Ambulance Victoria. We’re not convinced.”
Mr Arnott said the new minister should visit Wedderburn, talk to the community and ambulance officers and inspect the “sub-standard station operating out of the old police residence”.
“Wedderburn has one of the busiest CERT teams in country Victoria ... crews respond across the large part of the region, even into Bendigo,” he said.
“It’s an insult to them and to the town that a government can walk away from a promise and not answer our questions.”
Mr Arnott said Ms Shing had not responded to a development association letter sent four weeks before her resignation as minister. “Let’s hope we hear from the new minister and we get the project moving,” he said.
