Agents penned 16,900 lambs at Bendigo’s first sale back for 2023 on Monday, quality was very mixed with heavy well finished lambs still in limited supply.
A large portion of the yarding consisted of plainer trade and store lambs. Most of the usual buyers were present with good competition for the heavy trade and export lambs selling $15 to $25 dearer with sales reaching $284/head, with an average range of 800c to 850c/kg cwt, medium trade sold to $10 stronger for the better quality well finished lambs in short skins. Light trade and store lambs were either side of firm depending on quality with a wide range from 640c to 760c/kg cwt. Store buyers were active but selective on quality, with lambs back to the paddock and to feed on sold from $61 to $151/head.
Trade lambs 18 to 22kg made from $128 to $168, 22 to 24kg sold from $168 to $200, 24 to 26kg made from $204 to $230/head. Export lambs 26 to 30kg sold from $220 to $256 and over 30kg made from $246 to $284. 4950 sheep penned of mixed quality, not all the buyers were fully active.
Heavy crossbred mutton sold from $114 to $140, Merino’s ewes in higher value skins sold from $120 to $155/head, gaining $10 to $15/head. Light trade weights sold from $46 to $104/head to be a few dollars dearer to the last market.
