URGENT care cases treated at Inglewood and Districts Hospital have jumped 50 per cent in six months.
Chief executive officer Dallas Coghill said the monthly average increase came as the hospital’s new urgent care and acute care facilities were officially opened on Monday.
The $5.5 million redevelopment is the latest State Government upgrade at the hospital.
Mr Coghill said the jump in demand for urgent and acute care had been driven by better facilities and greater awareness of local services.
“We can do first liner of care here in Inglewood,” he said.
“And the upgrade has increased our capacity to take higher acuity patients.
“Patients who have had treatment in Bendigo can be transferred back to Inglewood and be in their own community for the next stages of their care.
“The eight acute beds in the upgraded section means the local communities now have access to a high level of care. This is a great development for the hospital.”
Ripon MP Martha Haylett said more than $8 million had been invested at the hospital with improvements to urgent care, acute care and allied health facilities.
Both Mr Coghill and Ms Haylett said there were ongoing discussions for further upgrades of facilities.
Ms Haylett said improving kitchen facilities was among possible projects.
Mr Coghill praised Brand Architects and Bowden Corp for the collaboration in completing the latest upgrade.
“We have very modern facilities for urgent and acute care ... the end result is in part thanks to the good relationship with the architect and builders,” he said.
A community open day is planned for later this year to show district residents the new facilities.
