Fire to bounce back, says coach Maher

CALIVIL is looking to rebound from a winless 2025 season in its clash with Mitiamo on Saturday, with Superoos coach Luke Lougoon empathetic to the Demons’ situation.
“We have been in that position,” he said, referring to Mitiamo’s 2024 season, which also brought no wins.
“We know how hard it was to come back from that, but we know the game’s not going to be a walk in the park.”
The Superoos improved last season to finish seventh with three wins, but Calivil’s hopes of emulating that effort have suffered an early blow with the loss to injury of 2026 best and fairest Riley Walsh.
While describing Walsh’s absence as a big blow, coach Sam Maher was confident the Demons could cover his loss, with several key defenders having been added to the list.
“It’s exciting to be back into it now,” Maher said of football’s return.
“Everyone goes into round one with confidence, our list has improved, and our best footy is good enough to challenge anyone.”
Mitiamo’s highly touted young recruit Ollie Lythgo won’t play due to ankle soreness, but Lougoon was hopeful he would be fit for round two against Macorna.
