BOORT star Carlos Egan has just two games left with the Magpies after accepting a one-match suspension for an early guilty plea on a striking charge in the loss to St Arnaud last Saturday.

Egan has told Boort that he will play with his former club Strathmore in the Essendon District league next season.

He will miss the North Central league match against winless Charlton this week, with his final games to be against Donald and Sea Lake Nandaly.

His departure is a serious blow for the Magpies, who have won only three games this season after making the finals in 2025.

Egan has been among the side’s best players in 12 of his 13 games this year and he has also booted 12 goals.

The future of another of the club’s stars, Liam Bianco, is in doubt for next season.

He is on the Box Hill Hawks list in the VFL, and Boort coach Andrew Rutley believes the Hawks may want to see Bianco play in a higher-standard league next year. He has been named in the Magpies’ best players 11 times in his 13 games.

In better news for the club, Rutley will return as coach next season after a handshake agreement with Boort.

Egan was given a yellow card late in the second quarter of the 30-point loss to the Saints, with the former Essendon VFL player off the field at a critical time in the match, leaving Boort a man down. He missed the first 15 minutes of the third quarter, when St Arnaud kicked three important goals during a string of firey and undisciplined passages.

But Rutley described the incident for which Egan was suspended as “pretty soft”, but he rued his team’s “undisciplined football” in giving away free kicks and 50-metre penalties.

The Magpies did manage to kick four goals in the third quarter with a three-man forward line, giving Rutley pause to consider a different structure.

“It shows us that we can score if we empty out the forward line and get some one-on-ones, so it’s something that we will definitely look at in the last three games.”

Rutley says he is already working on recruiting players for next season, with a focus on taller, big-bodied players to augment his young group to lift the Pies in 2027.

The injury-hit seniors have had to rely frequently on Under 17 players, but with the junior side on top of the ladder, they will exclusively play in the under 17 side for the rest of the season.
