The last-gasp victory saw Maiden Gully move to within a game of the Tigers, who are clinging on to fifth spot on the ladder.
A win for Macorna would have put them eight points and percentage ahead of Newbridge – effectively three games – and 12 points and more than 20 per cent ahead of Maiden Gully.
In a remarkably tight season, little moments matter.
Macorna’s last three games have seen a one-point loss, a three-point win and a four-point loss.
Win all three of those matches and the Tigers would be sitting comfortably in fourth place, and all but certain of playing finals.
The Maiden Gully clash was not a pretty game, played on a slippery ground, with the Eagles always just in control on the scoreboard.
Macorna was without coach Fergus Payne, who suffered a hamstring injury in the thrilling three-point win over Bridgewater a week earlier, but ruckman Matt Colak was again outstanding all around the ground along with speedy midfielder Sam Whinfield.
Monfries’ game-high three goals proved decisive in the Eagles’ crucial victory that keeps the Eagles in the hunt.
