Drought breaks: First flag since ’84

IT WAS 42 years in the making, but Pyramid Hill can finally celebrate another premiership in Northern District bowls.

The club’s number one side beat Cohuna Golf 3 by 14 shots in the Division 2 weekend pennant grand final played at Cohuna last Saturday.

And victory came on the back of a brilliant performance from the all-ladies rink of Rosemary Harris, Kathleen Wood, Jean Mann and Jan Leed (skip), who beat their opponents by 31 shots to nine. It was the only rink to win on the day, with the other two teams losing by one shot and seven shots respectively.

The first title since 1983-84 has given the small club a massive fillip, said Jean Mann.

“We are just all over the moon,” she told the Loddon Herald. “We couldn’t believe it when we beat Barham and then beat Wakool.”

Pyramid Hill finished fourth on the ladder after the home-and-away season and only managed a finals berth when Leitchville lost the final round to drop out of the top four.

“It’s a real Steven Bradbury,” Jean said of the fairytale finish.

She also claimed bragging rights at home over husband Lionel, whose rink lost by one shot, 20-19.

It was an unlucky loss for his team, which stormed home, picking up six shots in the last three ends. And it was a matter of what could have been for Lionel’s rink – they held five shots on the final end before the Golf skipper Linda McManus’ last bowl cut that to just one shot.

Pyramid’s third rink of Ian Bartels, Terry Stobaus, Marie Noelker and Marie Scott (skip) lost 23-16.

Three successive ends from 8-10 cost the rink dearly, as Cohuna Golf grabbed 10 shots in a match-winning burst.

With fewer than 30 members, Pyramid Hill’s win was a true victory for the underdog, with Barham alone having about 160 members.
