She went down in the first quarter, with the Demons having to shuffle the pack and wing defence Shay Wakefield moving into the main defensive role in the ring. Coach Annie Blow was full of praise for Wakefield’s efforts against much taller opposition and is comfortable if that change becomes a permanent one for the rest of the year. Calivil took control in the middle quarters after a closely fought opening term and moved to a 3-4 record for the season. Blow said she was not thinking of finals, describing this as a “rebuilding season”. Macorna remains winless on the bottom of the ladder.
INGLEWOOD’S remarkable rebound from two winless seasons continued with a fifth victory for the year, a 29-goal thumping of Maiden Gully. The Woodies’ 24-6 first quarter effectively ended the contest, with the young Eagles playing catchup for the rest of the match. Maiden Gully coach Christie Griffiths said her defence simply didn’t know how to match up on tall Woodies shooter Aleisha Shay in the first term but adjusted afterwards and largely kept pace with their opponents. “We have just got to play four quarters,” she said. Inglewood had strong performances across the court, with centre and coach Dani O’Toole, goal defence Casey Zass and goal attack Teresa Fitzpatrick outstanding on the day.
A DISAPPOINTING season continues for Bears Lagoon Serpentine, which fell to a 22-goal defeat at the hands of Pyramid Hill. Both teams have struggled at times this year, with a revamped Bulldogs lineup taking time to gel after two losing grand finals in succession. The Bears are now two games out of the top five, with finals looking only a remote possibility. Pyramid Hill broke clear early and maintained a comfortable margin for the rest of the match. Coach Chelsea Emmerson said she felt she had settled on her best lineup after a bit of tinkering. She said the number of turnovers and intercepts her players forced was a highlight of the performance, with Bec Cladingboel at goal defence and shooter Darcy Tierney the best on court against the Bears. Serp coach Erin Varker said the team had a plan to go out fast and get on the front foot, but Pyramid raced to an early 10- goal lead that ruined its strategy. The Bears best were goal shooter Ava Francis and goal attack Hannah Ilsley, with Varker confident her side can make a run towards the five in coming weeks.
