Boort Angling president Alan Wilson and members Ron Hird and Ian Lanyon assisted Victorian Fisheries Authority officers with this month’s release.

“Our club received a phone call to help with the release of more than 48,000 fingerlings and we jumped at the opportunity,” said Alan.

“About half the release was near Cowman’s Lane and the rest just below the weir. The fingerlings were bred at the new Arcadia Native Fish Hatchery, near Shepparton.

Construction at Arcadia took almost a year to complete and has nearly quadrupled the number of production ponds for Murray cod and golden perch from 32 to 125.

It includes brood ponds to hold mature breeding fish and shallow plankton ponds to grow out fingerlings to a size suitable to be released throughout Victoria.

When fully operational in coming seasons, Arcadia will have the ability to produce up to 6 million native fish each season - more than half the 10 million fish released across the state each year.

Expansion is one of two backed by the $96 million Go Fishing and Boating Victoria Plan which also includes a Macquarie perch breeding centre being built at the Snobs Creek hatchery.

Good catches have been reported on the Loddon River with St Arnaud club holdingits competition at Bridgewater last weekend when a 72cm cod was caught.
