Club clash a first in 90 years

IN THE year Pyramid Hill and Macorna last met in football, Adolf Hitler was preparing to host the Berlin Olympics, King Edward VII abdicated the throne to marry Wallis Simpson, and the last known Tasmanian Tiger died at Hobart Zoo. The two places are just over 20km apart, but not since 1936 have they faced each other in sporting contests until this coming Saturday. Peter Reynolds from the Pyramid Hill Historical Society has been delving into the history of the two clubs. He discovered that 90 years ago the Bulldogs and the Tigers were both in the long-forgotten Tandra-Macorna Line Association, which brought together teams along the Bendigo-Swan Hill rail line. Other clubs in the league included Mitiamo, Mologa and Dingee. In the days before most people had access to cars, the railway line was the most efficient means of transport for players, so leagues sprung up along the tracks. Macorna’s entry to the Loddon Valley league this season reunites two old foes with a shared past.
