ANDREW Kane has equalled the Charlton course record in taking out the club’s annual tournament.
“I had a good day at Charlton and was very pleased with the way I have been playing recently. It’s a pity these lockdowns keep interrupting my good form,” the Boort champion said of his success just days before Lockdown 6.0.
Kane finished the morning’s 12 holes one under par of 48 and then come home another three under par of 69 in the afternoon’s 18 holes. He won the tournament by eight shots.
“I play in it every year as part of the Kara Kara Golf Association’s tournament schedule which runs through July, August and September,” he said,
“I’ve been playing in these tournaments most years since my dad starting taking me to them as an 11-year-old in 1979.”
Kane said he started both sessions at the Charlton tournament on the 13th hole.
“We played 12 holes in the morning and then 18 in the afternoon. I started on the 13th hole both times and bogeyed it both times.
“In the morning I birdied the last two holes to finish one under. In the afternoon I had five birdies and one more bogey to finish three under and tie the course record with ex-local, Dan Hendy, who I played with.
“I usually do well at Charlton because I concentrate harder to keep the ball out of the thick trees. Two years ago, I shot two under in the afternoon. I have had a 66 at Korong Vale many years ago, then another 66 at Wycheproof in 2017 after having had shoulder surgery three months earlier.
“And there I also shot two under at Berriwillock two years ago in the Champion of Champions, and a one under last year at St Arnaud at the same event.”
Kane is playing off his lowest ever handicap of four at Boort and three at other local courses.
