LEADERSHIP in the Pyramid Hill community over a quarter of a century by fire brigade captain Steve Mann has earned him the CFA’s highest honour.

Mr Mann was presented with the CFA’s outstanding service medal on Friday night.

CFA board member Peter Shaw said the award request for Mr Mann had come from brigade members and the community.

“Steve is a highly respected member ... whose leadership is always sought in times of need,” Mr Shaw said.

“His strong decision making and approachable collaborative manner have provided leadership to countless incidents both locally and interstate for many years.

“The local group, brigade and community repeatedly turn to him for guidance and his voice on the radio is a welcome relief for responding crews and district staff whenever there is a complex event.

“He has consistently delivered strong leadership ... and Steve truly represents the CFA values and deserves the highest recognition for his leadership and service.”

A surprised Mr Mann received the award during a medal presentation evening.

Although intending to step down as brigade captain after 25 years in the role, Mr Mann said serving the community was important to him and the brigade.

Mr Mann has been widely praised for his efforts during the October 2022 floods and again 14 months later when summer storms again had roads cut and northern Loddon communities on flood watch.

He was central to preparing Pyramid Hill as rivers and creeks across the Loddon swelled and provided regular online updates as the situation evolved.

Mr Mann was one of the foundation leaders in the CFA District 20 Captain’s Peer Mentoring Program.

His medal citation said that involvement “provided a positive influence on other leaders in the district”.

Mr Mann said the award was an unexpected honour. “We join our brigades to help not receive medals,” he said.
