THE State Government’s container deposit scheme has had a rocky stocky start in the Loddon Shire.
Inglewood IGA has walked away from being an over-the-counter return centre where containers can be cashed in for a 10-cent refund.
“What initially sounded like a simple idea is just not suitable for a retail food premises,” said owner Peter Moore.
“There would have been dangers and hazards for staff receiving and sorting containers and the fact was for the amount of effort, there would have been little return.”
Mr Moore told the scheme’s north zone contractor Visy it had withdrawn from being a refund depot.
Businesses are to receive six cents for every eligible container returned. Stores receiving 1000 containers a week will receive $60 but are responsible for container storage and recording refund transactions.
Wedderburn Hardware and Boort’s Lakeside Cafe are the other two deposit points in the Loddon Shire.
The Loddon Herald was unable to contact Wedderburn Hardware although it is understood customers are required to bring only cleaned and sorted containers for refund.
Visy was contacted for comment on the withdrawal of Inglewood IGA from the scheme. A spokesperson said: “We have no comment to make.”
