VICTORIA’S container deposit scheme started yesterday.
Refunds of 10 cents will be given on bottles, cans and cartons.
Inglewood IGA is among Loddon refund points with the State Government also announcing Boort’s Lakeside Cafe and Wedderburn Hardware will return 10 cents on each container.
The Government says “hundreds of refund points” opened yesterday with the network to be expanded to 600 by next March.
Visy is operating the northern zone, one of three in the state, and responsible for the collection network in the Loddon where container returns are over the counter.
Reverse vending machines have been installed in some cities.
Visy will be required to have at least one collection point in towns of 750 people in regional areas, and at towns of 350 people in remote areas.
The Government said Victorians used more than three billion drink containers a year and the scheme would reduce the number of cans, bottles and cartons in landfill or discarded on streets and roads.
