DOGGED unbeaten knocks by Rose brothers David and Ben averted likely defeat for Kingower on Saturday.
They came to the crease with Kingower in all sorts of trouble against Arnold.
The bowling power of Redbacks’ skipper Ryan Metelmann, youngster Campbell Hancock and Henry McCullough had Kingower reeling at 7/38 in chasing the modest 111-run target.
At drinks after the 17th over, and a drop of Ben Rose at second slip, Kingower faced a huge task to hit another 72 runs for victory.
Ben Rose would be dropped again in the 27th over while David found gaps in the tight field for singles and occasional boundaries.
Luck remained on Ben Rose’s side when he was dropped again in the 30th over and Kingower needed 25 runs off 30 balls for victory.
The equation swung in Kingower’s favour despite the accurate deliveries of Metelmann and McCullough.
Needing two runs off the final over, Michael Dale’s first ball was hit by David Rose to keep Kingower’s undefeated season record.
Arnold veteran Phil Scholes had been crucial in the early collapse of Kingower, the wicketkeeper taking two catches and making a stumping.
Scholes had top scored for the Redbacks with an opening knock of 33 before caught by Ben Rose off Lachlan de Jong’s bowling.
Metelmann was also among the runs, knocking up 29 before caught by Riley Murphy who took two catches in the field.
Wedderburn Band had 10 overs to spare in overhauling the 122-run target set by Boort Yando.
James Van de Wetering gave Band a good start, hitting 26 runs before caught by Nick Scott off the bowling of Blake Slatter.
He departure with the score at 3/63 opened the way for Luke Holt to take charge of the innings and hit an unbeaten 60.
Holt had found the boundary with his first ball when teaming up with Van de Wetering and would also score three sixes.
Slatter would finish with three wickets but was unable to claim the scalp of Holt.
The best bowling figures, however, came from Boort Yando skipper Joshua Smith. Sending down three balls in the final over played, Smith bowled Matthew Lockhart and conceded just three runs.
Boort Yando saw Jarod Hodoras line up for his first game of the season, taking the wicket of Mackenzie Smith in a six-over spell.
Earlier, Boort Yando had made an encouraging start before Van de Wetering, Luke and Isaac Holt and Smith despatched Perryman, Smith and Cockerell to have the side at 3-53.
Fergus Bear was out for 20, just a few balls later, before Slatter showed mid-order spirit on his way to hitting Boort Yando’s top score of 42.
The removal of Slatter, caught by Smith off Turnbull’s bowling, signalled a quick succession of lower order wickets falling.
Turnbull took his second wicket late in play, finishing with two from 2.2 overs - one a maiden - and conceding just five runs.
Wedderburn this week has another crack at Kingower and on home turf, may be poised for a victory.
