Goulburn-Murray Water hasd temporarily closed Laanecoorie Reservoir to boatingm saying there is an increased risk to recreational boaters.
On Monday, Laanecoorie Reservoir was at 104.31 per cent capacity
GMW water storage services general manager Martina Cusack said there would be significant risk to anyone heading out on the water at these storages.
“We currently have a lot of water from upstream running through these storages, this creates strong currents that boaters can easily get caught up in. Furthermore, these currents can easily carry people over the spillways where the water can be particularly turbulent,” she said.
“The high rainfall in our region also means a lot of debris is floating downstream and into our storages. This can also be hazardous for boaters.”
The increased downstream release at Laanecoorie has prompted GMW to activate flood incident management plan at Laanecoorie No boating signs have been placed at both storages and chains have been positioned across the boat ramps at Laanecoorie Reservoir.
“GMW will review the storages daily until they return to ‘Safe Boating Levels’,” Ms Cusack said.
