Emergency services are bracing themselves for a serious flood event this week. Communities in northern Victoria are most at risk of serious impacts, and are warned to be alert and prepared.
Rain is falling across the Loddon this morning and the Bureau of Meteorology are warning of peak rainfall totals of 60-100mm across much of Victoria, potential for major riverine flooding, as well as flash flooding and damaging winds.
Emergency service staff and volunteers from across agencies are preparing for the deluge this week, and are ready to respond.
Victorian State Emergency Service Chief Operations Officer Tim Wiebusch reminds communities to plan travel accordingly, and advises to avoid travelling on Thursday if possible.
“Large areas of flash flooding is expected on Thursday and then the possibility of major riverine flooding in multiple catchements. Please do not attempt to drive through flood water.”
“It’s important to understand your flood risk. Find local flood guides for your area on the VICSES website.”
Emergency Management Victoria Deputy Commissioner Chris Stephenson urges communities to get ready early.
“While emergency services work hard to support everyone, it’s important for communities to be prepared by ensuring they have enough supplies for the first 72 hours following an emergency.
This will ensure our staff and volunteers can focus their efforts on where it’s needed most.”
