Studies of the diggers: the exhibition that has special country connection

WHEN Clayton Tremlett toured Loddon communities scouting for a location to exhibit Immortals, the connection was immediate at Mysia.
The town’s former war memorial school, now a community hub, was just the place to hang 30 portraits of digger memorials he had drawn.
“There’s the character, the sense of community,” Clayton said on Saturday as people viewed studies of memorials - Quambatook, Wedderburn, Wycheproof and many more - while others took part in an art workshop where students once sat at desks to listen and learn.
“On the walls are the honour boards of local men who served, too.”
Clayton’s exhibition recently finished a run at Melbourne’s Shrine of Remembrance where it was viewed by more than 50,000 people.
“In small communities, the exhibition is as relevant and important,” he said. “There’s the personal connection.”
The war memorial school committee’s Sue Gould said Clayton’s exhibition had “opened up new perceptions about their own war memorials”.
