LOW levels of “naturally occurring” arsenic have been found at Wedderburn’s Donaldson Park.
The traces were detected during soil testing of the site in May before Loddon Shire Council last week awarded the $4.9 million Donaldson Park community hub tender to Serle Brothers.
However, council operations director Steven Phillips said: “Council has made contingencies within the project budget to deal with this issue should it be necessary.
“At this stage council is working through the process with EPA. The impact may be some delays in the project.”
Mr Phillips said council was working with the EPA to establish the appropriate management solution under new regulations.
“The EPA regulations are about preventing the movement of contaminants onto other sites. At this point there is no risk to the community or anyone using the site,” he said.
Mr Phillips said low-level naturally occurring arsenic was typical in soils across the region.
Demolition of infrastructure at Donaldson Park started on Monday with removal of a harness racing tower.
