THE achievements of the ANZACs and later generations of servicemen and women had shaped Australia today, guest speaker Glenn Catto said he Calivil service.

He said their service, at times against overwhelming odds, explained why the ANZAC spirit was alive today.

“More than 330,000 embarked in World War One, including 3000 nurses, of which 60,000 were killed, 156,000 wounded,” he said.

““Two thirds of embarkees were aged between 18 and 25 .... 25 per cent of enlisted men were laborers before the war, the most enlists men in order were clerks, farmers, carpenters and miners.”

Glenn quoted words from the Mount Macedon memorial: “Death cannot rob them of their glory nor time efface the memory of their gallant deeds” and reminded people of the sacrifice recorded on country town halls and memorials.
