Zombies find their feet
HUNDREDS of southern purple-spotted gudgeon are adapting to their new wetlands home after a successful release last Thursday.
The “zombie” fish have been bred after the species was thought to have been extinct.
The release at Greg and Jo Bear’s Canary Island property attracted the interest of leading Victorian aquatic and fishery authorities and officials from the Melbourne Aquarium who are establishing a hatchery and hope to include an exhibit of native wetland fish.
“There’s amazing enthusiasm and positivity for what is happening with the wetlands habitat and the release of the southern purple-spotted gudgeon on our property,” Jo said.
