Will's gift win
YOUNG Bridgewater professional runner Will Stringer has had his first major win since hitting the Victorian circuit a year ago.
Will, a Year 12 student at East Loddon P-12 College, took out the weekend’s Parkdale Under 18 Junior Gift.
The run saw Will begin his surge through the field midway along the 120-metre track before a strong finish.
His Parkdale Gift victory was a big step up on the previous week’s run at Maribynong where he won the junior gift heat before finishing fifth in the final.
Will was originally trained by father Ian and is a third generation professional athelete.
While attending the famous Stawell Gift as a youngster to watch his father run, it was only last summer that he switched focus from cricket to running.
Now in the Neil McDonald stable, Will heads to Bendigo’s Tom Flood Sports Centre twice a week for training and on other nights either at the gym or out running the streets around Bridgewater.
He current focus is races over the 70-metre, 120-metre, 200-metre and 400-metre distances.
While expecting to have a few metres shaved off his handicap after the weekend’s win - he finished two metres ahead of the field -Will is hoping for more success this season and lining up for the starter in under-age races at the Stawell Gift at Easter.
