We're in child care desert

CO-LOCATION with existing kindergartens and school should be considered to bring rural communities out of the child care desert, according to a study released last week.

Mitchell Institute education policy officer Peter Hurley co-authored the report that has backed up Loddon experiences of families unable to access local child care.

“The current system doesn’t work in rural communities,” Dr Hurley told the Loddon Herald. “It’s really hit and miss.”

Dr Hurley said he did not believe sufficient work had been done by government on suitable child care models for rural communities. “There’s been disinterest, in fact surprise it’s not working and (there’s) a reluctance to see that,” he said.
