Walls awash with history

THE walls of Calivil’s 1960s hall have been turned into an artistic panorama of the district’s history.

Scottish artist Shaun Devenney has spent every day for the past three weeks giving colourful life to the cement brick building.

With assistance from Jo Guthrie, the mural charts the district’s journey from European settlement and agricultural life.

The importance of irrigation, dairying and the big wheat crops of the 1930s are to the fore.

Shaun’s latest mural - he has three around Echuca - also shows the Calivil Pipe Band on ANZAC Day, golf, netball, football and lawn bowls and the CWA.

The opening of the hall in 1960 is another scene from Calivil’s history given new life on the mural.
