Support for community

A NEW strategy is being prepared to welcome volunteers back to Loddon groups and organisations.

In June 2021, Loddon Shire Council was successful in obtaining funding of $75,000 from Regional Development Victoria to embark on a range of activities to support the re-engagement and development of volunteers following the disruption of the pandemic.

Council engaged consultant Lisa McCoy in December 2021 to work with the community and council officers to implement the Re-engaging Volunteers in Rural Towns project by June 2022.

The project focus

Understanding volunteers’ needs and gaps

Re-engaging volunteers

Engaging more young volunteers

Volunteer training and resources

Developing a community based Volunteer Strategy.

The journey so far

Ms McCoy has engaged with the Loddon community and schools across the Shire to learn what is most important for a sustainable and vibrant culture of volunteering.

Overall the community engagement heard from 301 people:

170 people completed the Volunteer Survey

36 students took part in focus groups at schools

55 residents attended a community focus group

40 residents were consulted with at a dinner or meeting.

During the engagement participants discussed ideas for attracting more young people into volunteer roles and ways of supporting a vibrant and sustainable culture of volunteering.

This information will inform the Volunteer Strategy and the development of resources that will support volunteerism in Loddon.

What’s next

Following feedback from the community three workshops are being offered across the Loddon Shire for interested volunteers to come along and enhance their skills and knowledge.

The workshops include:

Engaging Young Volunteers - Tuesday 31 May 2022, 6.30pm-8.00pm, Inglewood Town Hall Hub

Understanding Committee Governance, Roles and Responsibilities - Wednesday 1 June 2022, 6.30pm 8.00pm, Boort Resource and Information Centre

Making Meetings Successful - Tuesday 14 June 2022, 6.30pm to 8.00pm, Wedderburn Community House.

Bookings are essential and can be made by calling Lisa McCoy on 0428 644 070 or email lisa@locallogicplace.com.au

In addition to the face to face workshops, self-guided training and resources will be developed and made available via council’s website.

Beyond the conclusion of the project: The Volunteer Strategy will be completed and presented to council in June 2022.

This strategy will outline the actions required beyond this project to ensure the work that has been completed can be continued and that it will support Loddon volunteers beyond the conclusion of this project.
