Small town pools vital

PROMINENT Loddon resident Donald McGauchie has called on governments to step up and be part of keeping swimming pools in rural communities.

The former National Farmers’ Federation president and Telstra chairman from Prairie West said: “It’s fundamentally important that country pools are kept going”.

“Little towns deserve more consideration from government,” Mr McGauchie said.

He said all levels of government had “to get serious ... government has got to act together to run, maintain and if necessary replace pools”.

“One of the arguments originally for building the Mitiamo pool was so that children were not swimming in channels and dams. It was a strong argument at the time and is still today.”

His comments come as Loddon pools are beset with lifeguard staffing issues and Loddon Shire Council prepares to develop a new recreation strategy for open spaces and pools.
