Sheep market latest
THERE was a supply increase after the previous week’s stronger market, with 13,500 lambs and 7500 sheep yarded - 6700 more - at Bendigo on Monday.
Quality was not as good in the lamb run, with less well-fed trade and export types.
Demand was weaker. One major domestic buyer was absent, and although all other companies were represented, bidding was selective and the market lacked drive.
Heavy slaughter lambs over 24kg cwt were $15 to $25/head cheaper.
Lighter weight lambs held their value better to be $7 to $10 easier, while the best shorn store lambs were firm.
The slaughter lambs mostly affected by the cheaper trending the market either lacked consistent fat cover or were in plainer dry skins.
Buyers still showed a preference for recently shorn and fed lambs.
The heaviest lambs over 30kg cwt from $240 to a top of $267 in a plainer run compared to last week.
Depending on weight and breed these lambs showed a range of 730c to 800c for an average of 770c/kg cwt.
Heavy lambs, 26-30kg cwt, varied from $204 to $248.
There was reasonable numbers of heavy trade crossbred lambs, 24-26kg, which sold from $190 to $226 to average $210 at a ballpark cost of 808c/kg cwt.
Medium trade lambs $171 to $208 and also held an estimated price average of just over 800c/kg cwt.
But there were plenty of lambs that sold for less than 800c/kg, some plainer types and odd pen lots of a few head down to 700c/kg at times. Competition for store lambs remained reasonable, with the better bred and framed types from $135 to $170/head.
The mutton sale was cheaper and erratic, with only a few buyers following the market.
Heavy sheep $150 to a top of $190; the general run of Merinos and crossbred ewes $130 to $160, while light sheep varied from $36 to $120 as competition fell away in spots.
