Sentimental journey

WOW! Shellbourne trainer Kate Hargreaves had reason to dance at Sunday’s Wedderburn Pacing Cup meeting.

The rapidly-rising young Victorian trainer was in the sulky behind Wow We Can Dance for a rare drive.

Kate was at her family’s harness racing spiritual home and did not disappoint punters who had backed Wow You Can Dance to favouritism in the 1750-

metre Platinum Maiden Pace.

The four-year-old bay gelding streeted home by just under seven metres, ahead of Orama with Waiting for You another two metres back.

“The win here means a lot,” Kate said back in the stable yard after the race. “My harness racing roots are here in Wedderburn.”

Kate’s grandfather, father, uncle and other family members have been part of the club for decades,

Uncle Bruce Hargreaves is current club president and presented the trophy to Kate before other family members joined in offering their congratulations. “It’s nice to drive a winner ... I don’t drive often. It was a sentimental win and one I wanted to win on this track,” she said.

Kate also trained Nikks Pick, winner of the Stephenson

Memorial Pace on Sunday.

Kate and training partner Alex Ashwood notched up 100 wins for 2020.
