Season of improvement
Updated: Oct 20, 2021
A DROUGHT-BREAKING win and a few weeks sitting in the top half of the North Central league football ladder has given Boort a foundation for further improvement.
Coach Andrew Hawker says the season was certainly one of improvement for the Pies.
There was the long pre-season - preparations for lifting the fortunes of the Pies started before the 2020 season was aborted by COVID restrictions and lockdowns.
And while only notching up three victories in the stop-start 2021 rounds, Hawker is adamant there is plenty of room for the Pies to continue a return to good fortunes.
“The season was very difficult and will be going forward just to keep people involved,” he said.
“We want some success so that is our driver.”
Hawker said game style, fitness and skills had let the Pies down a little this season.
“We improved a lot. Having said that just when we started to get going it stopped each time,” Hawker said.
“There is plenty of improvement left in this group.”
The Pies’ coach said the drought-breaking win over Donald had been important.
Coming 1044 days since last savouring success on the senior football field, Hawker said it “showed the group we can achieve when we play a certain way”.
“The draw didn’t fall our way but no excuses. We dropped a couple I thought we could win which ultimately let us down ... definitely a hint of what could come,” Hawker said.
“Lockdowns hurt us but let’s look forward.”
Hawker said the off-season had started early for the senior group but “we have reserves and 16s in finals so we will look to support them as well as our netballers”. “We will still get back into action earlier and try to build a fitness base a bit earlier next year,” he said.
“We are a very happy group off field so I expect most to stay and look forward to adding a couple of extras that we have identified we need to find,” Hawker said.
Boort’s under 16 side finished the season undefeated and two games clear of Sea Lake Nandaly.
The reserves finished third with six wins in the home and away season.
