VOLUNTEERS swung into action at Serpentine on Saturday morning preparing salad rolls for a pop-up shop after the sudden State Government direction to abandon weekend sport.

The local football-netball club had been set to host the first Loddon Valley league final with pies, pasties, salad rolls and barbecue meat ready to feed players and parents.

Canteen manager Sarah Byr-nes quickly brought her volunteer team together and by 11am locals had ordered and picked up lunches and dinners.

“We had the food ready, we didn’t want to waste it,” she said.

“Everyone has been amazing at such short notice.

“We’ve made up more than 100 salad rolls and they’re a sell out. The barbecue meat will just stay in the freezer.”
