Red coat Joseph
DESCENDANTS of British Army veteran Joseph Matthews on Saturday unveiled a headstone at his grave in Inglewood cemetery.
The unveiling completed almost two years of work by the family to honour the mining engineer who died in 1914 and is buried with grand-daughter Alice Dowling who died seven years earlier aged four.
Joseph had enlisted in the British Army in 1859 and served in India for 21 years.
Descendant Angela Matthews said Joseph and Ellen Cox married while he was in India and they had 16 children, among them three sets of twins each of a boy and girl, the girls dying at birth.
