Funds dictate weed battle

STATE Government funding was vital to Loddon Shire tackling weeds, said council’s director operations Steven Philips.

He said weeds posed a serious threat to agriculture, economies and native plants and animals.

“The State Government’s Roadside Weeds and Pests Program provides vital funding to council to plan and implement control activities for the long-term management of state prohibited and restricted weeds and pests on rural roadsides,” he said.

“In 2017 specialist contractors carried out weed mapping across the shire’s 4600km road network. More than 10,000 sites of infestation were recorded.

“As part of this audit a multi-year roadside control program has been established, and provides an ongoing commitment by council to work in partnership with the State Government in maintaining control and early prevention of the identified species.

“As a result over 4000 sites have been treated, with ongoing monitoring and weed control within the available funds of the program.
