Changing markets

THE lure of Bendigo’s traditional cattle market is disappearing for many Loddon farmers.

Reduced stock levels and more selling options have contributed to the reduction in numbers being offered at Bendigo Livestock exchange.

The selling centre moved cattle from the designated Tuesday market to part of Monday’s sheep yarding 18 months ago.

A continued decline in numbers - just 18 head were offered three weeks ago - was the final trigger to move to fortnightly cattle sales.

This week’s first sale under the new format had 80 head, a vast improvement but way inferior to rival selling centres at Echuca and Swan Hill with 800 and more head commanding bidder attention.

Local district producers have told the Loddon Herald those northern centres have better facilities, attract more buyers and bring better prices.
