Award tops year of challenge
CALIVIL raised the Australian flag in celebration of 2021 Loddon Shire Young Citizen of the Year Hugh Cartwright.
Hugh was announced the recipient of the shire’s major youth award by Terrick Ward councillor Dan Straub.
The young farmer completed VCE last year at East Loddon P-12 College and is about to study agronomy at Longerenong Agricultural Col
He helped put together online events last year for the school, including the ANZAC Day service that crossed to all areas of the Shire.
Hugh was recognised with the Year 12 ADF Long Tan – innovators East Loddon Award for his significant contribution to the VCE Agriculture and Horticulture program at East Loddon.
He was an integral component of the student voice encouraging this subject to return to the VCE curriculum. He was also the recipient of the Year 10 ADF Long Tan – student leadership and community involvement East Loddon award for his leadership in school and broader community events, particularly with his fundraising and public speaking in the lead up to a school trip to Turkey.
Hugh said 2020 had been challenging, thanking family and friends for their support.
East Loddon Lions Club provided breakfast for the celebrations where guest speaker was Lisa Mitchell.
Lisa, a former dux at East Loddon P-12, this week returns to the school as a teacher and is studying for her masters in health and physical education.
She encouraged people to create their own opportunities and luck by being “brave enough to try”.
