ATM, phones go out

A SECOND planned power outage in five months forced some businesses to close on Sunday with phone and internet connections dropping out.

Powecor had told Wedderburn businesses electricity would be cut between 8.30am and 3pm but some shop owners doubt Telstra was informed.

Phones and internet went down about 12.30pm and only restored after Telstra rushed a back-up generator to the town.

Supermarket owner Leigh Randall said his store’s ATM and eftpos machines were unable to be used for several hours. “People don’t carry cash these days.”

Telstra regional general manager Steve Tinker said: “An extended power outage occurred in Wedderburn on Sunday, which affected our local exchange. The site’s battery backup system was able to keep services online for a number of hours, but no backup can last an extended disruption.
